The story

When Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ was making wudūʾ, the Prophet ﷺ passed and asked, 'What is this extravagance?' Saʿd said, 'Is there extravagance even in wudūʾ?' He ﷺ answered, 'Yes, even if you are at a flowing river' (Ibn Mājah, from Saʿd). Pause on the scene. A companion, on the path to purify himself for ṣalāh, pouring free water beside an endless stream - and still it is named waste. If a river cannot excuse a few extra handfuls, what of the food scraped into the bin, the money burned on what neither dīn nor dunyā keeps, the hours poured into the algorithm? The lesson lands harder than the wudūʾ: no resource is truly 'yours' to squander, because none of it was truly yours to begin with. This is why Allah does not call the mubadhdhir merely careless - He bonds him to the very whisperer who urges the wreckage on.

Why it's named first

Because Allah said 'inna al-mubadhdhirīna kānū ikhwāna al-shayāṭīn': the squanderers are the brothers of the devils (al-Isrāʾ 17:27). Read that. Allah did not call them careless. He called them brothers of shayṭān. The musrif (Day 181) exceeds the limit; the mubadhdhir destroys the resource entirely. Tabdhīr is throwing away. It is the food into the trash that could have fed someone. The money on what brings no benefit in dunyā OR Ākhirah. The hours given to the algorithm. The body destroyed on what does not heal. Tabdhīr is not just excess; it is wreckage. And Allah brotherhood-bonded it with the very enemy who whispers it into our ear.

In the Qur'an

وَءَاتِ ذَا ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ حَقَّهُۥ وَٱلْمِسْكِينَ وَٱبْنَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَلَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا إِنَّ ٱلْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوٓا۟ إِخْوَٰنَ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ ۖ وَكَانَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ لِرَبِّهِۦ كَفُورًا

“And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.¹ Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.”

Svenska: Och ge den nära anförvanten vad han med rätta väntar och [ge till] den behövande och vandringsmannen, men slösa inte över all måtta. Slösarna är demonernas bröder och Djävulen visade stor otacksamhet mot sin Herre.

In the Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah hates three things for you: idle talk, asking too many questions, and the wasting of wealth' (Bukhārī 1477, Muslim 593). 'Wasting of wealth' is tabdhīr directly named. And he ﷺ taught us to make duʿā: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, old age, the punishment of the grave, and the trials of life and death' (Bukhārī 6367). (The naming of tabdhīr itself is in the first hadith above, not this duʿāʾ.)

The cure

Three filters before every act of consumption: 1) Does this benefit my dīn? 2) Does this benefit my dunyā in a halal way? 3) Does this benefit another soul? If the answer to all three is no, it is tabdhīr. Drop it. Practical: 1) Track one full week of expenses; mark every item that fails all three filters; cut them next week; 2) Track one full week of screen time; mark every hour that fails all three filters; cut them next week; 3) Take what is freed (money and time) and redirect it as sadaqah of cash and sadaqah of effort.

What is at stake

The mubadhdhir loses three things: the resource itself, the reward of using it well, and a brotherhood with shayṭān that becomes an alignment of taste. Slowly, the mubadhdhir's nafs begins to feel pleasure in waste; the trash becomes ordinary; the discarded becomes invisible. And on the Day, every squandered rizq will be a witness against the one to whom it was given.
