ʿAdam al-Ikhlāṣ · The Loss of Sincerity

The story

Imām Aḥmad said: 'The most difficult struggle for me has been with my intention.' If Aḥmad struggled, what should we say? But he persisted, and won.

Why it's named first

The first Tazkiyah day (T001) addressed riyāʾ; the second-to-last revisits its deepest form. Ikhlāṣ is the heart's audience being only Allah. Without it, every deed is for someone, even if subtly. The cluster opened with riyāʾ; it almost closes with the same diagnosis at a deeper level.

In the Qur'an

وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ ٱلْقَيِّمَةِ

“And they were not commanded except to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct religion.”

Svenska: Men inga andra påbud gavs dem än att dyrka Gud med ren och uppriktig tro liksom de som i gångna tider sökte sanningen, och att förrätta bönen och att hjälpa de behövande. Detta är den sanna, i människans natur nedlagda religionens klara och evigt giltiga [påbud].

In the Sunnah

«إنّما الأعمال بالنّيّات». 'Deeds are by intentions.' (Bukhari 1)

The cure

Audit your intentions deliberately. Before any deed: 'For You, O Allah.' During: catch the audience-shift; redirect. After: do not narrate to gain praise. The muscle of ikhlāṣ builds with practice.

What is at stake

Without ikhlāṣ, deeds are scattered acts with no destination. The Day will deliver them where intended (people's pleasure) and they will be empty there.
